Crude Tall Oil Derivatives: Renewable Solutions for Modern Industries

Crude Tall Oil (CTO) is a by-product derived from the Kraft pulping process of softwoods, primarily pine. After pulping, the black liquor contains fatty acids and rosin acids, which are separated to obtain CTO. This unique renewable feedstock is further refined to produce various valuable derivatives that serve diverse industries.

What Are Crude Tall Oil Derivatives?

Crude Tall Oil is fractionally distilled to separate its key components, including Tall Oil Rosin (TOR), Tall Oil Fatty Acids (TOFA), and distilled Tall Oil (DTO). These fractions are then chemically modified to produce derivatives with enhanced properties suited for specific applications.

Common CTO derivatives include:

  • Tall Oil Rosin Esters: Used in adhesives, inks, rubber, and coatings.

  • Tall Oil Fatty Acid Derivatives: Serve as intermediates in soaps, detergents, lubricants, and alkyd resins.
